If you’re a golf fan yourself, it’s only natural that you’d like your children to follow in your footsteps. Unfortunately, though, it’s not as easy as simply handing over your clubs when it reaches their turn. Finding the right clubs for your children doesn’t have to be difficult. We’re here with our handy guide on how to choose the right golf clubs for kids. Let’s get into it!
What are the most important factors in children’s golf clubs?
Ensuring that your child has a set of golf clubs that fits them is important for creating a positive and enjoyable golfing experience. Just like when purchasing adult golf clubs, there are several key factors to consider when purchasing clubs for your little one. Paying attention to these aspects will not only contribute to their overall comfort, but also plays a significant role in developing proper swing mechanics and improving their game. These factors include:
- Length: The length of the golf clubs is possibly the most important factor to consider. Clubs that are too long or too short for your child can affect their posture and swing, meaning that they are not only uncomfortable, but inconsistent.
- Weight: If your child is using a club that is too heavy, this could lead to fatigue, compromise their swing, or even cause injury. On the other hand, a club that is too light may result in a lack of power and control. Ensure that the clubs are appropriately weighted for your child’s strength and skill level for maximum performance.
- Grip Size: Ensuring that the grip size is correct for your child will mean that they are able to comfortably and correctly hold the club, apply the right amount of pressure and manipulate the club properly.
- Flexibility: The flexibility of the shaft is another important factor. Junior and more inexperienced golfers will benefit from using clubs with a more flexible shaft, because it allows for a smoother swing and improved distance.
To make sure that all of these factors are correct for your child’s unique requirements, it is beneficial to purchase these clubs in store and get them properly fitted, rather than buying them online.
Should I buy sets or individual children’s golf clubs?
Another question that we get asked all the time by parents is whether it is better to buy golf club sets or individual clubs for their children. The answer is that it depends (helpful we know). For example, if your child is still quite young and will be growing quickly, we would recommend a complete junior set. Junior golf club sets tend to come with all of the clubs that a child needs to get started, as well as a golf bag. They are designed to grow alongside your children, and allow them to improve with the same equipment. This is probably the cheapest and easiest way to avoid new purchases every year.
However, if your child is older and their growth has slowed down, or they are improving at an alarming rate, it is probably better from a performance point of view to buy individual clubs that allow them to get the best out of their equipment. For example, purchasing individual clubs allows you to personalise the set based on your child’s skill level and preferences. For older junior golfers, a carefully selected set of individual clubs can act as a transitional phase before they move to adult clubs. This will allow them to adapt to the characteristics of adult clubs, while still aligning with their current performance.
How long will junior golf clubs last my children?
According to KidsHealth, children usually grow at a steady rate, growing around 2.5 inches a year. Most junior golf clubs can progress between three and five inches in length as your child grows, meaning that the clubs should last a couple of years before you have to upgrade.
Different companies have varying gaps in size options for junior golf sets. For example, US Kids provides sets with as little as three inches between them. Other companies, such as Callaway, offer junior sets with a larger range, spanning six to eight inches between sets.
Additionally, up until approximately age 11, boys and girls who are of average height and weight usually share similar characteristics. This means that if you have multiple children that you want to introduce to golf, you should be able to reuse the junior clubs with your other kids, as long as they are high quality.
When should my children transition to adult clubs?
To ensure that your child continues to progress, noticing when it may be time to move to adult golf clubs is key. As a parent, the easiest way to know when to transition from youth golf clubs to adult clubs is by keeping an eye out for certain telltale indicators. These indicators include a growth spurt, increased strength and a more refined swing. If your young golfer consistently displays advanced skills and high performance, it might be time to consider more specialised equipment.
To make this transition smoother, take a gradual approach. We’ve already suggested switching to an individually curated bag of clubs, rather than a junior set, allowing you to personalise the collection. Another way of doing this is introducing a few adult clubs into the set, helping your child to adapt gradually. This phased method ensures a seamless shift while supporting ongoing skill development.
