What are fairway woods?

A fairway wood is a golf club designed to hit shots from the fairway (the closely mowed area between the tee and the green on a golf hole). They are the second longest club in a golfer’s bag, after the driver, and are characterised by their slightly larger clubheads and longer shafts compared to irons, allowing golfers to achieve greater distance with their shots.

They are commonly used for shots that require both distance and accuracy, such as long approach shots to the green or tee shots on shorter par-4 holes. Fairway woods are numbered, usually ranging from 3-wood (lower loft and longer distance) to 7-wood (higher loft and greater ease of launch), indicating their loft and potential use.

How to choose the best fairway wood for you

A golfer’s bag can contain up to 14 clubs to play with, so you don’t have to limit yourself to only one fairway wood… oftentimes golfers want two in their kit, but a bag can contain as many as five!

The first consideration point when looking at purchasing some fairway woods is what you want to use them for. They can be used as another option for teeing off, or for propelling the ball towards the hole.

Once you have decided what you will be using your fairway wood(s) for, you then have to find the best one for you specifically. An important element in this process is getting the right flex and weight of the shaft. It is crucial that you match your swing speed with the flex of the club to ensure that the club face hits the ball at the right time, and that you choose the right weight for your personal preference so that you can feel the positioning of the head better during your swing.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a fairway wood?

A fairway wood (often shortened to ‘fairway’) is designed for hitting shots from the fairway or rough, featuring a slightly larger clubhead than irons to provide greater distance. These clubs have rounded heads and smooth soles to interact well with the turf, making them suitable for accurate, long shots from fairway or light rough. Recent designs incorporate adjustable features for weight and loft, allowing golfers to customise their clubs for optimal performance.

How often should I replace my fairway wood?

A decent fairway wood should last for about 150 to 200 rounds, however, if your swing is faster, you can expect these clubs to wear out sooner compared to a slower swing
